The effects of climate change are having and will continue to have severe and destructive effects on Victorians and humanity as a whole. The consequences of not acting are far greater than the costs of taking the action.
- Reason demands that the Victorian government declare a climate emergency!
- Reason supports the recommendations of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); every level of government must act now to negate the effects of climate change and divest from all fossil fuel exploration, mining and exports.
- Reason supports zero carbon by 2030.
- Reason endorses the principle of climate justice for all Victorians.
-
Reason supports the investment in direct solar energy, wind energy, and ocean energy as replacement for fossil fuel energy systems. Reason demands an emergency transition to 100 renewable electricity by 2030. This can be done by:
- the facilitation of energy access, particularly for rural areas
- we can advance energy security goals by diversifying the portfolio of energy technologies and resources, and
- improve social and economic development through potential employment opportunities.
- Reason calls for the government to ensure incentives to reduce emissions in large industrial facilities to drive systemic change by 2023.
- Reason believes the Victorian Government should establish an Industrial Transformation Future Fund to support low- and zero-emissions industrial asset replacements by 2030.
- Reason believes the Victorian Government must commit to put in place the building blocks of large-scale industrial transformation immediately.
- Reason supports rapidly transitioning Victoria to an electric economy getting all households and businesses away from gas within 2030.
- Reason supports transitioning the coal and gas industries to decentralised green energy production as an export to the world, leveraging Victoria's green technology resources advantage.
- Reason supports ending the sale of new petrol-fueled cars in Australia by 2030 and ensuring buildings and the electricity grid are electric vehicle-ready.
- Reason supports targeted trials of zero-emissions trucks, to assess their performance.
- Reason supports government subsidies for the production and sale of electric vehicles, removing price barriers for consumers and stimulating the local industry.
- Reason opposes all coal and gas power projects including exports and imports and supports renewable power generation over mining and resource-intensive power production methods such as coal, gas, and nuclear.
- Reason supports investment into the feasibility of Victoria’s potential sites for pumped hydro-power.
- Reason demands an end to logging all native forests immediately and asks the government to investigate alternatives like hemp production and wood pulp. Hemp can replace old-growth forest logging and pulp production regenerates soils in regional areas and removes toxins and rebuilds soil quality.
- Repeal the zero and low emissions road user charge, and investigate other ways of raising revenue to cover road infrastructure.
- Reason believes regulatory bodies must be strengthened to protect communities and the environment from corruption and misuse and damage. Strengthen IBAC by implementing the recommendations from the CPI Centre for Public Integrity.
- Implement the Operational Watts recommendations on parliamentary ethics.
